Rant #1,854: You Don't Have To Paint Me a Picture
As promised, back to business.
I am going to try to be un-political with today's Rant, but it is going to be awful difficult to do so in lieu of the person being negatively profiled in this photo.
If a picture is normally worth a thousand words, then this one has been worth many thousands--or perhaps millions--of words over the past couple of days.
Mixing fake news with real news, this photo has drawn the ire of many, and to me, I have to ask the question: Why?
The photo at the top of this column is actually one of several featuring Kellyanne Conway, one of President Trump's top advisers, sitting in a completely human, non-posed pose on a couch in the oval office.
These photos took milliseconds to take, but their impact on many people has lasted many hours and now into days.
Some people said she disrespected the office of the President by sitting in this way; others claimed it was un-ladylike to sit this way.
Some have even claimed that it was disrespectful to the delegation who was featured in the background of the photo, leaders of black colleges, of which a new bill signed by the President will greatly benefit the schools that they represent and the goals that these schools have for their students.
I even read that some people believe that what she did is racist--that she would never sit that way if the delegation in the same room with her was a white one.
One legislator, who shall remain nameless because of the utter stupidity of what he said, claimed that Conway was getting into a "familiar pose" by sitting this way on the couch in the Oval Office.
Monica Lewinsky part two, anyone?
To me, this is probably the dumbest of all supposed news stories, another way for some to get at our President in any way that they can.
So many people have sounded off on this photo and the group of photos showing Conway to be a human being, not a robot, that you really have to wonder if certain people need a hobby, something other than the hobby of bashing the President at any cost, even through a third party.
Heck, the legitimate press actually asked a Black Lives Matter spokesman what she thought about the pose! And predictably, they received a completely racist comment from the spokesman.
Look, can any one say that they never have sat on a couch like this, even for a millisecond? Sure, this is the couch in the Oval Office, but goodness gracious, there are numerous photos of President Obama sitting with his feet up on his desk in the Oval Office.
What is the big deal?
It humanizes these people, because sure, the are in positions most of us can only read about, but they put their pants on the same way we do.
And in Conway's case, I guess she puts her dress on like any woman does.
And what even gets my goat even more is that many of the complaints have been made by supposed feminists, who are suddenly employing a double standard when it comes to how women and men are allowed to sit on a couch.
If you want to get down to brass tacks ... no, I am not going to go there as some others have.
Here is what Conway said about the whole mishigas, clearly a tempest in a teapot.
"I was very busy today and didn’t follow a lot of it, but I know there are a couple of reports at least showing what happened. And what happened is we had the largest gathering of men and women to date in the Oval Office for a picture,” she explained Tuesday on "Lou Dobbs Tonight." “I was being asked to take a picture in a crowded room with the press behind us. I was asked to take a certain angle and was doing exactly that. I certainly meant no disrespect, I didn’t mean to have my feet on the couch.”
Why she even had to defend herself is beyond me.
Goodness, is it that slow a news week where how someone sits makes so much news?
Or are Trump's detractors grasping at straws now, because they have nothing else to grab onto now?
Heck, you want to criticize him, go ahead, but again heck, make it something more important than this nonsense.
Have a good weekend. I will speak to you again on Monday.
