Rant #2,895: Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)

I admit to it …

Sometimes I get very predictable in the topics that are covered here at the Ranting and Raving Blog.

And today I am going to get as predictable as can be, because since today is Friday the 13th, I am going to talk about just that.

Today happens to be the only Friday the 13th of the year, so if you are superstitious, just somehow get through this day, and you won’t have to worry about it again—

Until 2023, when there is a Friday the 13th in both January and October.

We have been pretty thin on Friday the 13ths in recent years, as there was just one in 2021, in August.

I seem to remember that there were some years that we have as many as three Friday the 13ths in one calendar year, but not this year and not next year.

My one horror story of today is that I have to go to get my allergy shots today, not that that on the surface is not a bad thing, but I have to once again travel more than 20 miles away to get them, and then more than 20 miles on the return trip home.

I was told by the local office that I get my shots from that closer site once again, but after I received a round of shots last month, the local office told me that they can no longer give me the shots—a short three mile trip away from my home and then three miles back—because they do not carry my insurance.

Funny, last month the home office told them to give me the shots, but now, they have gone back on what they said.

It makes no sense, but little has made sense on the health plans that I have had since my wife retired and she, our son and I lost her health care coverage from work.

As for me, whether it was New York State of Health-provided health care—even called the “most horrible plan” by health care professionals I dealt with during this period of time—or Medicare-related health care, every day seems like Friday the 13th when I have to go to the doctor and actually use whatever plan I have.

The only possible fix to this idiocy is to ask my regular GP doctor if his office would give me the shot each month—which is how I got the shots for decades, but not by my current doctor—and I will do this the next time I see my regular doctor, in July.

So even though I am not a superstitious person, I am not looking forward to getting my allergy shot today, which, of course, is on Friday the 13th.

Woe is me!

I better not walk under any ladders today, because that could make it worse.

Let me keep my fingers crossed, too.

I mean, what else can I do to ward off all the demons that will befell me today?

Look, 13 in and of itself is not a bad number.

Jewish children get bar mitzvah at the age of 13, and as you know, the Ranting and Raving Blog just turned 13 years old in the past week.

So what makes Friday the 13th such a superstitious day, a day that we all dread?

According to the HITC web site (https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2022/05/13/how-many-friday-the-13th-in-2022/), some beliefs trace their roots back to The Last Supper and Crucifixion of Christ, owing to the date 13 and the day Friday.

In Norse mythology, it is considered unlucky because it is believed to be the day when Loki gate-crashed a banquet in Valhalla. The number of attendees was 13 on his arrival when he tricked blind god Horde into killing Balder, his own brother.

And, in Biblical tradition, Friday the 13th is the day when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge.

Very interesting indeed, and I guess you can throw all those into a barrel, shake them up, and you get why modern culture considers Friday the 13th to be such a horrid day.

So in conclusion, I hope that the “evil” of Friday the 13th doesn’t hit you, and that you have a good day today.

But just to be on the safe side, cover up all those mirrors in your home, don’t encounter any black cats, and like I said before, don’t walk under any ladders.

And to really be on the safe side, wear some garlic around your neck—

That will certainly keep not just the demons away fro you, but also the general population …

Which might not be such a bad thing when you think about it.

Have a great weekend, and I will speak to you again on Monday.
