Rant #2,203: Listen To What the Man Said
Well, if Donald Trump is going to run again for President in 2020, he now knows who one of his adversaries will be on the other side.
No, this person did not declare for President, but he pretty much did it anyway, during an insipid speech where he made an offhanded remark that should upset all Americans, not just Republicans.
And it is something that you probably won't see heavily covered by the so-called "honest" media, because it makes one of their poster boys look as foolish as he already is.
Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York and one of the young stars of the Democratic Party, yesterday uttered during a rebuke of President Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan a remark during a bill-signing that had even his supporters bewildered.
Cuomo, the son of the former governor of the Empire State and himself a second generation American, whose grandparents came here from Europe, uttered the following when speaking about the President and his programs and procedures.
"We're not going to make America great again. It was never that great."
Those in attendance either slightly chuckled or gasped.
Cuomo--who is currently running for the governorship again--seeing that he had made a major faux pas, tried to explain himself to the crowd.
"We have not reached greatness; we will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged," whatever that means, "we will reach greatness when discrimination and stereotyping against women, 51 percent of the population, is gone and every woman's full potential is realized and unleashed and every woman is making her full contribution."
Funny, all the women I know ARE making their full contribution, and his explanation for what he said was patronizing, actually deriding women's contributions to this country.
Of course, damage control then went into full mode, because evidently even fellow Democrats were upset with what he said.
"The Governor believes America is great and that her full greatness will be fully realized when every man, woman and child has full equality," a spokesperson said, fully going against what Cuomo said when he uttered, "America was never that great,"
"America has not reached its maximum potential. When the President speaks about making America great again--going back in time--he ignores the pain so many endured and that we suffered from slavery, discrimination, segregation, sexism, and marginalized women's contributions. The Governor believes that when everyone is fully included and everyone is contributing to their maximum potential, that is when America will achieve maximum greatness."
Replying to what the Governor said, Republican gubernatorial candidate Marc Molinaro replied, "America, with its imperfections, has always been great," and he called on Cuomo to apologize for his comments. "The Governor is so determined to distract voters from his failed policies and corrupted administration that he's willing to dismiss the steady, determined march of the American people, making and remarking the greatness of America. Mr. Cuomo owes the nation an apology. He should be ashamed of himself."
Others even brought up the fact that Cuomo, himself has, in the past, used the phrase "make xxx great again" in his past speeches. When he first ran for governor in 2010, he stated, "Together, let's make New York great again."
Whatever the case, Cuomo also did his own damage control, bringing up the inequities found in our country to answer those who were appalled at what he said.
But by saying what he said, he formally threw his hat into the ring for President, and he also gave his opponents a touchstone to pick on when they need to show that he is not a viable candidate.
And he is also running for governor of New York State again. And many wondered why "Sex in the City" actress Cynthia Nixon was even making an attempt to unseat him as the candidate of the Democrats. Forget about what he said for a moment; Nixon and everyone else now knows that Cuomo is running for President based on his insipid remark, so if he wins another term as governor, he will never serve the full four year term. Her thinking is probably that that gives her more cannon fodder, and with a debate coming up between her and him, you just know that that is going to come up.
But back to the remark that Cuomo made ...
What an insipid, stupid thing to say.
His grandparents evidently didn't think that this country "was never that great" when they came here in the early 1900s to better themselves.
His father, Mario, a child of immigrants, rose to the office of governor, and even ran for President.
He and his parents, coming from very hardscrabble beginnings, enjoyed the American dream, and raised their families here.
The current Governor Cuomo, a second generation American, has benefitted from all the toil and hard work of his grandparents and father and mother. He is also living the American dream.
To bring up inequities is a smokescreen for covering himself when his insipid remarks were made.
Where else could he and his family rise from such humble beginnings to such levels of success?
To say that our country "was never that great" is a slap in the face to all Americans, and to all of those who chose to live here to better themselves.
Cuomo does owe New Yorkers and all Americans an apology for what he said, but you know it will never come.
He is pampered, privileged, and has lost all connection to his family's humble beginnings here.
Nobody has said that this country is perfect, and that there are things we don't have to work on. But where else would we get the opportunity to do just that than the United States?
President Trump, you now have your first challenger, and if nothing else, please take him to task for what he said, and what he has defended since he said it.
If this is the best the Democrats can do, President Trump, if he wants it, will enjoy a second term in office as our President.
No doubt about it.

My bad. Mario Cuomo was considered for President twice, but turned it down each time. So, while he did not actively run for President, even to be considered for the commander in chief position is a testament to the greatness of this country, based on his humble beginnings. But yes, that was my slip up.
