Rant #1,478: Thank God It's Friday!

"Thank God it's Friday!"

I never understood that phrase at all.

It really should be "Thank God it's Friday after 5 p.m.!" or "Thank God it's Friday night!" or "Thank God Friday is over!" or something to that effect, shouldn't it?

If we are thanking God for Friday, in effect, we are thanking God for another day of work, for those people who work on Friday.

But I guess if you say "Thank God it's Friday after 5 p.m.," it doesn't fit into a song lyric very well.

But that being said, it is Friday, the final day of the work week for people like me.

In that photo of me accompanying this Rant, I have that "What me, worry?" look on my face. I guess back then, I didn't worry about too many things, and during the summer, it could be Friday, Monday, Wednesday ... it didn't matter, because I was having so much fun, the days kind of blended into each other.

But as an adult, I have to take things into a different perspective.

I have accomplished a lot at work this week, and I am proud of my output so far, which will be added onto today, of course.

And what makes today even better is that I actually get a paycheck today.

Yes, I am grossly underpaid--like everyone is--but at least today, I can see what I have accomplished in dollar signs.

At least I can say that yes, thank God today is Friday, and thank God for a paycheck, however rotten it is--and take it from me, it is.

My pay hasn't caught up with inflation yet, and probably never will, but I do remember the days when I was out of work in the 1980s and 1990s, and whatever I get today sure beats those days.

I really feel for those on the outside, those people who aren't even counted in the unemployment statistics because they have been out of work so long.

I was one of those people several years ago, and it really plays on your brain--and your ego--when you are out of work.

You keep telling yourself that you are good, you are adept at whatever task is thrown at you, but then you go for a job interview, and the interviewer asks you, right away, the very first question: "So, why have you been out of work so long?"

It is really an unfair question, but you have to keep a smile on your face when you answer that question. It is very difficult to do.

But I haven't had to personally worry about that for a while now, so I don't. I just really understand what many of us are going through who have been out of work for a year, two years, three years, maybe more.

To them, I wonder if they say, "Thank God it's Friday?"

For them, just making it through another week is enough to rejoice about. Friday has nothing to do with it.

And since we are talking about good things, this blog is doing very nicely, thank you.

The last two posts--about Micky Dolenz's No. 1 record and about pinup queens--have generated the most looks of any I have written in some time.

I don't expect this particular entry to duplicate that, but heck, like I have been saying, "Thank God it's Friday," so it is all good.

And the Yankees are firmly in first place. What more do you need to know? I have been blindsided by their success, believe you me! I didn't think they were nearly as good as they have been this season.

But anyway, once again, let me say to you "Thank God it's Friday!" even though I still think that saying makes little or no sense, and I will speak to you again on Monday.

"Thank God it's Monday?" No, I don't think so.
