Rant #1,473: Backyard Swimming Hole

Last Sunday, it was a beautiful day outside in my neck of the woods, so for the first time all summer, my wife and I decided to take advantage of the day and swim in our backyard swimming pool (not the one shown here, but very much like it).

Really, I am not talking about swimming, per se, because the above ground pool we have really isn't big enough to swim much in.

But on a hot day, at least we can bathe in it, meaning get in the water and just stay in it as the sun's rays hit our suntan-lotioned skin.

At least we know there aren't going to be any sharks or other sea entities that will harm us in the pool's water.

We do have to be weary of parasites, but the pool is cleaned regularly, so we don't really have to worry about that, either.

We have always had a backyard pool, or at least it seems like we have always had one.

It sure beats the hubbub that people go through to get to the beach or the neighborhood pool, although going to the beach and pool are fun outings for the family.

But as I get older, the only beaches I want to swim in are the ones we visit when we go on vacation.

When we went this year, we swam in some beautiful locations in the Bahamas.

The water was crystal clear and soothing.

But back on Long Island--which has some of the best beaches in the country--I really don't mind, at this point in my life, to simply stay at home and sit in what amounts to a big bath tub.

As a kid, we went to pools, beaches, and we did what we did to stay cool during the summer.

As an adult, I am happy we have the backyard pool.

And on those days when we use it, all I have to do is close my eyes, and I am in the Bahamas again.

Speak to you on Monday.
