Yes, it is time for another
installment of “Bits and Pieces,” where we look at some stories that I don’t
consider to be full-blown column-long Rants in a shorter way.
Heck, it is September already, so why not begin the month in such a creative fashion?
So here goes—
• New York City Institutes “Safe Zones”: Today, New York City puts in place new “Safe Zones,” where firearms are prohibited, with only authorized personnel, such as police, allowed to carry guns within those limits. Those found to possess firearms in these areas who are not permitted to do so will be charged with a felony.
“Safe Areas” include schools, houses of worship, sports arenas and numerous other places where even prior to this new law, there was no reason for guns to be carried.
One of the places that guns are now strictly prohibited is Times Square and its surrounding area, where most of the theater district is located.
New York City has become the modern version of the Wild West, with shootings commonplace each and every day, and all this law really does is to prevent law-abiding citizens from carrying guns where they don’t belong, which is all fine and good, but doesn’t really address the real problems plaguing the city as far as gun violence is concerned.
Thugs don’t follow any laws, and with bail reform, why should they? Even those low-life’s with long criminal histories are let out of incarceration at the drop of a hat, so do you really think this new law is going to stop those determined to cause trouble to think twice about what they are doing?
All this new law does is to pacify tourists coming to the city on vacation, giving them the false sense that they are safe because this law will protect them.
And just how are you going to enforce such a law? Are you going to check randomly to see that the little old lady who happens to be shopping in Times Square isn’t a pistol-packing’ mama with a firearm in her purse? Are you going to rely on the honor system for enforcement? Are signs enough to ward off anyone who even thinks about bringing a firearm into one of these supposedly safe spots?
And while the law prohibits most people from carrying firearms, are they allowed to carry knives, machetes, box cutters and other potential weapons in the same places where guns are prohibited?
You can thank the two-headed monster of New York State/City government for this incredibly impossible-to-enforce idea, and that means New York State Governor Kathy “The Yokel” Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who are so buried in their own egos that they actually think that this plan will work.
But even they admit that it will be difficult to enforce.
Leave it to the Democrats to believe their own egos are bigger than the real safety of the populace, and that leads right into this—
• Student Debit Relief Plan Instituted by Federal Government: Another Band-Aid-style program is being instituted by President Biden, another Democrat who doesn’t have a clue about what the real problem is related to the incredible debt many college graduates bear.
The Administration is putting forth a measure where those drowning in such debt will be able to lop off as much of $10,000 of their debt, with some even getting as much as a $20,000 pardon for such debt.
That is all fine and good, but really all that it is a pandering for votes that doesn’t address the problem of high student debt, and in reality, makes the problem even worse.
Why is student debt so high in the first place? There are a number of reasons for this, and a lot of it lies with the students themselves and with the schools themselves.
First off, when you take out a student loan, you are doing just that, taking out a loan from a financial institution that will eventually need to be paid back in full and probably with interest attached.
So anybody utilizing clear thinking would know that to minimize your debt, there are several things you can do. One is to go to a local college, another is to not live on campus, and another is to save money to pay off your debt now while you go to school.
Using these simple measures can put you on the right foot to pay off that debt ASAP, but like most of us, students often live beyond their means when they go to school, and all they see is what is right in front of them at the moment, and they don’t see what awaits them in the future.
And then we have the schools themselves, which basically force students to bankrupt their futures for the present time.
Who pays for certain college professors who demand atmospherically high salaries? Who pays for those that get a free ride, like those with scholarships such as athletes on the school’s athletic teams?
Someone has to pay for this, and it is the Average Joe student who pays for the football player who gets the free ride, as well as the professors who use their name to draw a healthy paycheck.
This nonsense has got to stop, and it is ultimately up to the students themselves if they want to play this game or to not only get a good education, but learn about finances and how they impact you after college and into the future.
Oh, and did I mention that in at least 13 states—including New York—this $10,000 or $20,000 in possible relief is considered income, and you are going to have to pay taxes on that money come tax time?
Funny, the President never mentioned that in his pitch … wonder why?
Further, if you owe $100,000 or more in college debt, $10,000 or even #20,000 is just a drop in the bucket. The other money that you owe doesn’t go away, and still has to be paid off.
And that leads to the next subject—
• Harvard Signs Up Former Mayor of New York City As Instructor: If you are searching for a tangent example of what I just stated above, look no further than Harvard, which announced that it will soon count former New York City Mayor Bill deBlasio as one of its faculty.
Since the former mayor could not convince anyone outside of New York City to vote for him for any elected position he was seeking—including president—in a marriage made in leftist heaven, deBlasio will be an instructor at the Ivy League school … now what is he costing students in his new role?
Somebody has to foot that bill, because this leftist, racist and totally incompetent former elected official is not doing this for nothing, you can bet on that.
And I am sure his syllabus will not include anything about “How I Single-Handedly Destroyed New York City … and Had Two Terms in Office to Carry Out My Master Plan.”
I rest my case. Another “Bits and Pieces” is in the books.
Now, onto other matters … .
