Rant #1,415: The Final Countdown

The Boston Marathon bomber got what he should have gotten yesterday.

Finally, he got 30 judgments of guilty, and that is good.

Yes, it was pretty much a forgone conclusion that this terrorist would get that, so I don't think it surprised anybody.

I mean, his lawyers also said that he was guilty.

But of course, the first phase of this court proceeding is not where they are going to be earning their keep in this trial.

It is the second part, the sentencing part, where they are going to earn their stripes.

They are going to have to prove that this cold blooded killer should not be put to death as a result of what he did, and although this part of the trial is a bit dicier, I do believe that this moron will not get the death penalty, and will live out his life, hopefully without parole, in some prison.

His lawyers--and notice, I don't mention his name, because he doesn't deserve to be mentioned and out of respect to the victims, his name need not be mentioned--will bring a cascade of psychologists, other mental health experts, and probably some family members to plead his case to live.

They will tell the jury how he was a psychological victim of his brother, who actually masterminded this whole scheme; how he felt that he must follow his brother's wishes; and how he was a victim, too.

His family will tell us what a wonderful boy that he is, and that already one son has been lost, and how cruel it would be to take another one.

His family will also probably tell us how horrible our culture and country is, and that our political climate here--and not the actions of the two men--drove the brothers to create bombs to blow people up.

I am sure all the bleeding hearts will have a field day with this, but I think the overriding factor here is that Massachusetts is not a death penalty state, and he will be spared because of that.

I am sure people from New York to California would line up to have a chance to pull the plug on this imbecile, but it simply is not going to happen. Massachusetts is not going to bend its laws for one person, even if he did murder, maim and scar so many people.

And he probably has his youth going for him too. Now 21 but 19 when these acts were committed--including the cold-blooded murder of a police officer--I think people would think it would be callous to put him in the electric chair at such a young age.

Of course, even if he were to get the death penalty, you can bet that there would be appeals, and he wouldn't be going so fast anyway.

But it won't happen.

He will be sent to some high-security prison to rot away his life for the next 50 or 60 years.

I am sure that he will have to be put into solitary confinement for at least some of his prison time, as prisoners are apt to know who he is and want a real piece of him.

Yes, taxpayers will foot his bill, and who knows, maybe he will even complete his college education in jail, all paid for by the taxpayers.

But there is no reforming this creep.

Perhaps he will eventually get prison justice, as the Oklahoma City bomber did.

Maybe he will appeal his parole, and bleeding hearts down the line will defend him.

Who knows what awaits this ingrate.

But it really doesn't matter.

As long as the survivors of this massacre are satisfied that justice was doled out, that is all that really counts.

(By the way, I am taking tomorrow off for personal reasons, nothing too bad to be honest about it, so I will speak to you again on Monday.)
