Rant #1,839: Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow (?)

So, we are supposed to be getting six to 12 inches of snow today.

Schools have closed, businesses have closed--not my place of work, of course, a place which has as much regard for its workers as a spider has for the prey it catches in its web--and we are all prepared for the worst.

As you might remember, I called for a blizzard yesterday in this column, because I don't feel like going into work, especially the work that I have to go to.

Well, I got up a little after 4 a.m. this morning, looked outside, and saw nothing.

I mean, I did see my car in the driveway, my wife's car in the driveway, just about every car off our street, but according to the weather forecasters, I wasn't supposed to be seeing these things today.

They were supposed to be covered in snow.

Yes, it is snowing in other places, but not yet here.

I turned on the TV, and the pretty faces that greeted me told me that we were getting what they call "a wintery mix"--rain and snow--but the snow was definitely coming.

OK, I can buy that, but I will be at work already once it comes, since my place of business has no concern for the safety of its employees.

Don't laugh when I tell you this--or you can have at least a titter if you want--but one of the people in our employ--one of the big honchos--actually lives at my place of business. He has a room there, resides there during the week and on some weekends, and basically is there 24 hours a day, no matter what the weather is.

So when you ask, "Are we open?" when there is such a weather disturbance, his replay is, "If you are here, you are here, if you are not, you are not."

Very reassuring for us workers, wouldn't you agree?

Anyway, right now at least, it doesn't appear to be doing much of anything outside, so off to work I will go.

My wife's bank is supposedly closed today, but she still has to call in to the work hotline to make sure she doesn't have to come in.

My son just happens to have the day off today, so we don't have to worry about him.

So right now, I am in pretty much a holding pattern as I am typing this, waiting for something to happen.

But quite frankly, I haven't had much luck lately, and I don't expect to have much luck with the snow today.

One way or the other, if we do get something, I am going to have to shovel, so I am doomed anyway.

When is it summer anyway?

  1. As I was ending this Rant, the snow started, and now, with only essential vehicles permitted on our local roads, I have been "forced" to take the day off from work. Honestly, it did not take that much to "force" me to stay home today, but I did intend to go in today, was all ready, dressed, had my lunch packed away, but it was no meant to be. I guess the guy who lives at work will have the place to himself today.
