Rant #1,834: Another Day

Happy Groundhog Day!

According to American folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on February 2, then the spring season will arrive early, prior to the vernal equinox; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its den, and winter weather will continue for six more weeks.

I don’t know how many times the groundhog has been correct in his prediction, but I guess it is all in fun, so remind me to laugh at this nonsense.

“Groundhog Day” was also a popular film with Bill Murray, who played a TV weatherman who goes to a Groundhog Day event and somehow, enters a time warp, where every day is repeated over and over.

Again, remind me to laugh at this film, because I never got its humor, but I did get how annoying the film is, but others will argue that point with me.

To me, today is simply the 33rd day of this already very long year, and very little else.

We are in the middle of winter, and one day it snows, the next day it is warm enough to melt all of that snow.

I don’t know what the groundhog has had to do with all of that.

Pitchers and catchers report this month to spring training, and to me, that signifies that the Major League Baseball season is just a couple of weeks away, and also that the warmer weather is coming.

Spring training happens every year, and I am sure for veteran players, it does get a little boring, but I don’t know what the groundhog has to do with that.

The Super Bowl is being held this weekend, and you already know what I feel about that event.

February is the shortest month, and at least this year, we don’t have to put up with February 29, probably the most annoying day on the calendar, since it comes just once every four years.

I truly believe that we can live without it. I know that I can.

It is also Black History Month, honoring the history of people who were often brought to this country in the most horrid of circumstances.

That is something that even the groundhog would want nothing at all to do with.

February also has President's Day, a day that we honor those who have led this country to the great level of everything that we have here, and in particular, we remember George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, two of our greatest commanders in chief.

On a lighter note, this is also the month where we celebrate our love with Valentine’s Day.

The love of my life has been married to me for nearly 24 years, so she probably deserves some type of medal, so I will give her a great big kiss on this special day.

She deserves more, and one day I will give it to her, if I can.

And I would be remiss if I forgot that on February 13, a Monkee turns 75. Yes, Peter Tork reaches that incredible age, and not only do I salute him, but it also shows all of us that yes, we are all getting older.

So that is February, the bridge to March, and then April … I could go on and on and on.

But let’s see what the groundhog predicts—maybe he (or she) is on to something.
