Rant #1,690: Whopper Bell, Perhaps?

I just want to preface this Rant right away by telling you that I like Burger King, but I don't love it like some people do.

I eat it on occasion, usually when my son wants it when I go out to get dinner on Saturday nights, which is customary in my house.

It gives my wife a break from preparing dinner at least one day a week, and no, she hates Burger King. When my son wants Burger King, I go someplace else to pick something up for her, and it usually isn't from a fast food place.

Anyway, to get to the point of this Rant, a few Burger Kings are offering a new option for those customers torn between going there to eat or going to a Taco Bell, which is invariably nearby.

Local owners have come up with something called a Whopp-rrito, which is pretty much a Whopper turned into a burrito.

It contains all the Whopper ingredients--the meat, the cheese, the pickles, etc.--all rolled up into a burrito.

Burritos are handy, especially when you are dining in your car, so they have taken one of the secrets of Taco Bell and adapted it to their own restaurants.

But don't go out and try to get one at your local Burger King. It is only in a few restaurants--the closest one to me is in Heritage, Pennsylvania, wherever that is--and supposedly, Burger King has no plans to roll it out nationally.

But if it takes off like its hot dogs have ... well, you never know.

You have to give it to Burger King for trying new things.

Unlike McDonald's, which has become quite staid in its new offerings, Burger King, like Avis, is trying harder, coming up with new ideas to try to attract customers to its restaurants and away from McDonald's.

But this time, they are also hitting Taco Bell where it hurts, swiping one of their most successful concepts and adapting it for themselves.

And the parent company didn't even come up with this, it was created by some local operators, so kudos to them. Creativity exists on the store level, too.

So while I doubt I will ever get to order a Whopp-rrito--unless it rolls out nationally--I hope the offering does well.

It shows a lot of ingenuity, and gives customers another option when they are looking for something to eat.

And again, their hot dogs have taken off, so why not the Whopp-rrito?

And no, my wife still won't eat Burger King, Whopp-rrito or no Whopp-rrito.

Me, I would at least give it a shot.
