Rant #2,583: Winter Wonderland

Welcome to February!

The shortest month can also be the cruelest month, and today, the cruelty inflicted on people in my part of the world is that we received lots of snow, with more to come over the next 24 hours.

I also overslept, which in itself is not a bad thing, but the reason why I overslept is not so great.

My wife works in a bank, and even though the public has been told to stay off the roads, as of right now at 7:27 a.m. in the morning, she is on delayed opening, which means her bank is going to be open, but it will not open on time … meaning that she is going to have to go into work today.

It is totally amazing that during what we have been told is a blizzard, and in a situation where the local government has told us to stay off the road, that people will still go to the bank.

I guess they get comfort in knowing that their money is there and that they can count their money if they like, but the last place I would go today, if I was going to go anywhere, is to the bank.

Complicating matters is that today is the first day of the month, so many people get their Social Security today—I usually have to wait until the third of the month to get mine and my son’s payment—and I guess that makes today the day to manipulate your money for your own personal needs.

But the snow is there, our street just was plowed about two minutes ago, and there is really no need to do all of this banking business today is there?

So because of this, my wife has to go into work on treacherous roads, and I am not too happy about that.

When I was working—and had an office to go to—my work would often pull this nonsense about opening or not opening.

One time nobody called me to tell me what was happening, so I went into work and opened the office in the middle of a blizzard. To get to my work, I also did a 360 degree spin on the main road, and somehow survived that, and I got into work not too happy that I risked my life and limb to do so.

I opened the door, prepared for my day, and we received a phone call after I had been there for about an hour.

It was the big boss, and this is how the phone call went:

“Hello.

“Larry, what are you doing there?

“What do you mean, what I am doing here? I never got a call to tell me not to come to work.

“Oh, OK.”

Click.

We ended up opening that day, and we had exactly three people show up. We were told we would be credited, but I don’t know if we ever were.

And that is another reason that I hate the snow as an adult, because it puts workers in an odd situation not of their own doing.

I don’t have to worry about that situation anymore for myself, but I do have to worry about it for my wife. Our son isn’t working today, so he can really take advantage of the day and sleep it off.

My wife is another story, and I personally don’t like the situation it puts her in.

There’s lots of white on the ground, but people evidently want to count their greens no matter what the situation.
