The inauguration is finally
over, and Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took their oaths of office and are now
our president and vice president, respectively.
And that is for better or worse.
I did not vote for this duo, but I am willing to give them a chance to do what they took those oaths to do: uphold the law of our land and serve the people of this country.
They have an uphill climb to do that.
We are in the middle of a pandemic that is being made worse by the fact that the distribution of the “magic potion” to cure our ills has been bungled on all levels … we have a reeling economy … and we have stark divisions on almost every subject under the sun.
Remember, although Biden received the most votes ever cast for a president, he also received the most votes cast against him for president, too, so he has to try to win those people over, or at least convince them, to a certain level, that he is a president for ALL Americans.
He tried to do that in his speech yesterday, which was a decent speech, but things were happening around him, and directly linked to him, that casts doubt on whether he can achieve that goal of trust that he so yearns and needs.
First off, even prior to the inauguration, Biden took the easy, and quite frankly, racist tack by saying that the way the anarchists who stormed the Capitol building were treated was in stark contrast at how the rioters and lawbreakers who acted during the Black Lives Matter protests of this past summer, and that if the anarchists were black, they would have been treated much more harshly.
That is utter nonsense, as I said it is racist itself, and let’s be honest about it: New York City let go thousands of rioters who broker the law, defaced buildings and destroyed businesses, while the anarchists in the Capitol are being picked up and arrested one by one each and every day since the insurrection.
Racist? What racism is being show here?
And during yesterday’s inauguration, while this is not directly linked to Biden or Harris, this one incident reflects so badly on healing this country that I cannot believe that if they knew about it, they let it go on anyway. It might seem small and insignificant, but it said a lot.
And that was Jennifer Lopez, a proud American, singing in both English and Spanish at the inauguration.
The last time I looked, Puerto Rico was part of the United States. Yes, Puerto Rico is mainly an island of Hispanics, but the last time I looked, English is the chosen language of this country, although admittedly, it is not our official language.
Singing in English and Spanish—and to do it at the inauguration of the new President of the United States of America--demonstrates that the great divide will not be hurdled unless we acknowledge that English truly is spoken here.
Not knowing English, not understanding our common language, is an impediment that many of our people face, and not just new immigrants who come here. We have second and third generation Americans who cannot speak or understand our language, and that puts a stranglehold on their chances at movement up the ladder of success.
If we do not share a common language, then we have the United States of Babel, where everyone speaks their own language, nobody understands each other, and we continue to have this divide.
There is nothing wrong with being bilingual, but why do some people refuse to learn this language?
My great grandparents and grandparents came here with nothing and they did not know English, but my grandparents insisted that English was spoken in the home and that their children knew the language. They did not drop their heritage by knowing English.
In fact, my grandparents, in particular, felt it was their duty to learn the language, to be American, and they became proud Americans and knew both their native language and their adopted language.
What is so hard to do?
I watched the proceedings on CBS, and I was astonished at the unprofessional attitude exhibited by the panel of “experts” that were reporting on the day.
I have never, ever heard such biased reporting in my life. This is what I said on Facebook:
“I am all for giving the new administration a chance.
However,
the brown nosing going on during CBS's coverage of the inauguration is
nauseating at best.
The best is when Oprah's best buddy--you all know who I am talking about--was foaming at the mouth about that young woman's poem, or whatever it was, and feeling the need to get her friend into the action, she was telling viewers ad nauseum about why she was wearing yellow, and that Oprah, of course, had so much to do with it.
CBS does not report the news on a daily basis like they claim they do, with reporters constantly adding in their own opinions and agendas into their reporting.
Today was the absolute worst example of this I have seen yet, with one reporter/correspondent/whatever you want to call them falling over each other not reporting what was happening, but literally stating their opinions at how "regal" and "wonderful" things are now that Biden/Harris are at the top.
I guess we are going to have to listen to this drivel for the next four years.
Let the American people use their own heads and decide whether the Biden/Harris team is the second coming of Jesus Christ as it is being portrayed as.”
Is this what we are going to have to put up with for the next four years, a virtual pass for the Biden administration?.
And yes, I was raked over the coals on Facebook for stating that we should give the new administration support and to see what they can do to unify our country.
Some brought up the “stolen” election again, others assumed since I voted for President Trump that I backed whatever he said or did 1,000 percent—if they read my Rants for the past four years they would know that is not so—or they simply could not believe what I was saying.
Again, I am not a registered Democrat or a registered Republican, nor a registered Conservative or a registered Liberal.
I am an independent voter, have voted for candidates in all of those categories—and others—for the past 45 years, and I will continue to do so when we vote again in November.
I am not beholden to a party, which is the true Democratic spirit, and I intend to vote out any incumbent that I can once we get to vote again, because I believe that they have ALL contributed to what we are currently going through in this country.
Onward and upward … today I bring my mother to the hospital so she can get her coronavirus shot.
There is some trepidation there, because thousands of appointments in New York have been canceled because of lack of the vaccine, and when your appointment gets canceled, it means just that, and you have to start all over again.
The last time I looked in my email, I have not received any notice saying her appointment was canceled, but I will be monitoring my email all day to make sure everything is copacetic.
Yes, onward and upward—to the good health of my mother and the good health of this country.
And that is for better or worse.
