Rant #2,485: With a Little Luck

Happy Friday the 13th.

In my house, you would have thought that yesterday was this big day, with all the stuff going wrong.

Our oven was broken, and it needed an igniter, and the whole thing cost us a pretty penny, but at least it works now.

About a half hour after the repairmen left, I opened the cupboard, and out came a drinking glass with such force that it broke into literally 1,000 pieces all over the place. I have never seen anything like it. I cleaned everything up, but even hours later, I felt little pieces still on the floor.

Sure, it isn't a mirror, but will it bring me years of bad luck?

And then, finally, sometime last night--probably technically Friday the 13th, but it was during my sleep that began in Thursday the 12th--the toilet started acting up. It woke me up from my sleep, and yes, I fixed it myself--the chain sometimes gets stuck, not allowing the toilet to refill correctly--and then I tried to go back to sleep, but I must have been up for at least an hour before I was able to do that.

Well, today is actually Friday the 13th, so based on what has been going around me lately--yes, the black cloud--I am almost wondering what is going to go wrong today.

Every year has at least one Friday the 13th, and some years have as many as three such days. In 2019, we had to wait until September 13 to have our first Friday the 13th, and today is the second and last one for the year.

We will have two Friday the 13ths in 2020--in March and November--and just one in 2021--in August.

Why people are so afraid of negative things happening on the day is beyond me, but moviemakers have certainly capitalized on the day, with the "Friday the 13th" franchise making probably billions of dollars now.

So if the day has been good to moviemakers, then why do people think it is so bad for them?

I just don't know. I do remember that at my previous place of buisness, we had two employee purges during Friday the 13ths in different years, and looking back, I guess it could have been me losing my job rather than others, so Friday the 13th was actually a good day for me, because I still had my job.

I guess that September 10 is my personal Friday the 13th, because that is when I lost my job this time around.

And with all the negative going on, with me at its center, I am hoping that this Friday the 13th is just another day, another brick in the wall, and that it doesn't stand out from any other day in any way, shape or form.

Maybe this year, Friday the 13th will turn out to be a lucky day for me.

I mean, you never know ... and I think that is why we all look at Friday the 13th as a negative day, because we are anticipating the worst, because we believe the day to be one of negatives, not of positives.

So I am going to look at the last Friday the 13th in 2019 as a positive day, and I sure hope it turns out that way for me.

But no, I won't push it ... I won't be walking under an open ladder, I will try not to break a mirror, and hopefully, no black cats will come my way.

Friday the 13th ... just another day in my neck of the woods (cross my fingers on that one).

Have a great weekend, and I will speak to you again on Monday.
