Rant #1,747: Labor Day

Well, the end of the summer is evidently here, because we are now fast approaching Labor Day weekend.

Even though the calendar actually says that we have a little less than three weeks for summer to actually come to an end, we have it drummed into our minds that once Labor Day comes, the summer is over.

It isn't, but it is the last major holiday within the summer season, so I guess we can get away with Labor Day being the end of summer.

Lots of people will be taking off today, have off on Monday, so they have a nice, compact, four-day weekend to recharge their batteries.

Even if you just have the regular three days off, you have some extra time to relax, think and enjoy yourself with a barbecue, a ball game, or simply to spend some more time with your family.

It has, actually, gotten slightly cooler in my neck of the woods, so at least right now, we aren't pushing the 100 degree mark as we were earlier in the summer, but are only pushing the 80 degree mark, so it is a little more comfortable, and yes, it does tell us that the seasons are changing.

In many parts of the country, the kids have already gone back to school, and in other parts of the country, that day is coming.

So many of us have already abandoned the beach for the classroom, and I guess it is a rude awakening that summer cannot last forever.

Labor Day celebrates you and I, the labor force of this country, the people that make this country the great place that it is.

Whether you belong to a union or you are totally on your own, you helped build this country, make this country what it is, and on Labor Day, we celebrate our work force, still the greatest work force in the world.

And whether you work 9 to 5, 8 to 4 or are part timers, Labor Day is a day that we can all take a bow, because we have all done a good job.

And for the unemployed among us, yes, you work, too, you worked, you lost your job for one reason or another, and you work to find another one that is suitable for your talent.

You take a bow, too, and that goes for retired people, who worked their butts off and now are experiencing the pleasures of not having to go to work every day.

You have earned that right.

So all and all, Labor Day is one of our best holidays, because it celebrates US.

Have a great Labor Day, and yes, you will hear from me on that very day, on Monday, and there is a reason that you will hear from me on that holiday.

And I think that if you think hard enough, you just know why you will hear from me on Monday.

I will give you a few days to figure it out.

  1. How do you write an entire blog post about a public holiday and not understand what the holiday represents? Labor Day isn't about you and me. It's about unions and trade organizations. It honors the labor movement in this country. You and I are not part of the labor movement. You and I aren't even part of the labor force per se, we are considered "middle management".

Enjoy your long weekend, and be sure to thank a union member for your extra time off.

  2. Ah, the naysayers are back ...

Yes, the origin of Labor Day is certainly with the unions and trade organizations, but the meaning of the Labor Day has changed a bit over the many years it has been around, and now the celebration is for ALL workers, you and me included.

But of course, you have to get on your high horse to berate what I said, because that is what you like to do.

Well I am going to knock you off your high horse, because Labor Day is NOW a celebration of all workers.

And Mr. Bo, if you actually read what I wrote, you now would know that I don't have the day off, and, in fact, I had to work on Saturday and on the holiday.

I thought you would be smart enough to have figured that out by what I wrote, but you now certainly know that I have to go to work today, so the holiday, at least to me, isn't a holiday at all.

  3. Talking out of your hat again, Larrry? Go check your sources. The US Department of Labor agrees with me. https://www.dol.gov/general/laborday/history

  4. And Jim Bo, Larry is AT WORK ON LABOR DAY. His employer opens on Labir Day. Wouldn't happen in a union shop.

  5. Larry, you call me Jim, or you can call me Bo, or you can call me Jim Bo, but you doesn't have to call me Mr. BO.
