Rant #1,714: Bits and Pieces

Once again, I talk about a couple of subjects that don't really need a full Rant exploration, and I can talk about them pretty concisely.

Here we go!

Trump Chooses Indiana Governor Mike Pence As a Running Mate: I don't know anything about Pence, but I think that it is pretty funny--maybe ironic--that Trump picked a guy named "Pence" as a running mate, his choice for vice president should he be elected into the White House in November.

Am I the only one who found this kind of funny? Isn't pence the name for some type of money in England? I think it is equivalent to our penny.

Yes, it a money name, and we know that Trump knows about money.

I am sure that if there was a Mr. Dollar out there, he would have found him, too.

Hey, there is one--televangelist Creflo Dollar.

Now, that would be a real team for the ages!

Major League Baseball's Second Half Begins Tonight: The post All-Star Game season starts tonight, and can teams like the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs keep their grips on the top spot in their respective divisions?

How about teams that seem to have one foot in, and one foot out, like my beloved New York Yankees, who are .500 at the break after an impressive series against the Indians. What are they going to do during the second half?

Will the Yankees be buyers or sellers? Will they trade their few commodities and kind of throw in the towel to get younger, or will they wager that they need maybe a piece or two to stay in this thing?

Right now, it really is a crap shoot with a team like the Yankees, who will be at home playing some of baseball's best teams--the Boston Red Sox, the Baltimore Orioles and the San Francisco Giants--during the next two weeks during a very important homestand.

My family and I will be at the game tomorrow--a birthday present from my wife to me--so literally by tomorrow, we will see whether the Yankees are contenders or pretenders.

Rhino Records Announces Release of Two Monkees Greatest Hits Albums: On the heels of the incredible success of the Monkees' "Good Times!" LP, Rhino Records announced the imminent release of two greatest hits albums.

One, "Monkees 50," will be released on CD and contain 50 tracks, the usual suspects like "I'm a Believer" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday" as well as containing newer tracks, such as a few from their latest hit release.

The other, "Monkees Forever," will be released on both CD and LP, and will contain just a condensed version of the other release, a few key tracks like "Last Train to Clarksville" and "Daydream Believer."

Are these releases truly necessary? The Monkees seemingly have more "Greatest Hits" and "Best ofs" than they do regular albums, but you know what they say, strike while the iron is hot, and it is hot right now.

These releases are more for fans who have just gotten into their music now, and as such, I guess it can't hurt to have them on the market.

For an original fan like me, I will get them eventually, just to be a completist.

My Father's Outlook: As you know, my dad has pneumonia, and you don't play around with this at any age, and you certainly don't play around when the person who has this is 84.

I spoke to him briefly yesterday, and I spoke to my mother, and my father seems to be getting better in baby steps since he got home, although he continues to sleep the day away.

He is following the regimen and schedule that he has been given to the letter, he seems to be a bit stronger even though he has lost about 20 pounds, and he just looks better.

I know that he is at least improving a little bit, because his appetite is much better. He even had his beloved Burger King yesterday.

And he told me that it will take three weeks for him to get back to where he was, and yes, go back to work.

I told my mother to let him talk, it might be three months before he is really, really better, or even more than that.

But if it gives him confidence, if it gives him a reason to get better, let him talk.

It is the proverbial carrot on the stick. It gives him something to shoot for, and if that is his goal, let him talk all he wants ... it can't hurt.

That's it for now. Speak to you again on Monday. Have a great weekend!

  1. Your father is a strong man, I'm sure he'll be fine. As for Mike Pence...Trump may have picked him for his "money" name, but women in Indiana have a different reason to remember his name. Google "Periods for Pence". Almost as good as what the LGBT community did to Santorum.

  2. I have to admit I know nothing about this guy at all. He is good looking, might get some more women to vote for Trump.

  3. You need to educate yourself on Pence. He's the governor who had to walk back a "religious freedom" law he signed when half of his state's industry threatened to leave because of its anti LGBT sentiments, it was the first time he was in the national spotlight, and he was very inarticulate while handling the crisis. He's an evangelical, comes out as "very strong" for Israel, but...when he was a Congressman, he said "I don't have a synagogue in my entire district," and the members of Temple Beth-El and Temple Beth Boruk wanted to ask "what are we, chopped liver?" http://forward.com/news/345124/the-indiana-synagogues-that-mike-pence-forgot/

  4. And frankly, while he is far more physically attractive than Trump, I don't find his looks compelling, and I doubt most women would ignore their own self interest to throw themselves at the feel of a man who inspired Periods for Pence. Just my two pence, as it were.
