Rant #1,712: Back to Normal ... Sort Of
My father came home from the hospital late yesterday afternoon.
He was tired, looked like he hadn't slept in a couple of days--he hadn't had a good sleep while in the hospital--and all he wanted to do was get into his own bed, which is understandable.
I think he will be fine, but he still has pneumonia, and now begins the long road to recovery.
It can take weeks or even months to be rid of this ailment, and for an elderly person, it can take even longer.
He speaks of going back to work, but if he does, it probably won't be for months at best. He probably knows that, but saying that he wants to go back to work allows him to strive for something, which will make his recovery even better, because he has that proverbial carrot in front of him.
It will become his goal, but right now, it is just that, a goal; it might not be reality.
Yesterday was a bit of a whirlwind day for me, too.
I had to pick up my son at work, then pick up my father.
In between, I squeezed in several hours of work.
Not to contrast this with my father's plight, but I was also pooped at the tail end of yesterday.
I watched as much of the All-Star Game as I could, and then I basically conked out.
But it was all worth it. To get my father home this week was MY goal, and now everything can get back to some type of normalcy.
I can go to work with the knowledge that my father is home, and less importantly, that I don't have to run around like I did the past couple of days, that everything is taken care of.
But that is what family is. Family comes first, and you do what you have to do to make sure that everybody is taken care of, and then you proceed with whatever you are doing.
The week still has three more work days, and it will be tough, but I will get through them. And then the weekend comes, goes quickly, and then like a hamster in a cage, I am on the treadwheel again.
But at least my father is home, out of the hospital, and on the road to recovery.
That just makes everything better.
