Rant #1,398: 108.6 Inches

It's math time!

How much exactly is 108.6 inches?

Let's see, it is a little more than nine feet, and it is slightly more than three yards.

And it isn't done yet.

The 108.6 inches I am referring to is the amount of snow Boston has gotten this winter season, which eclipses a record for the Massachusetts city, and they have been keeping such records there since the 1800s.

Even with the weather starting to warm up around the country, Boston got nearly three inches of snow on Saturday, helping it to eclipse its record.

I have been complaining about the snow since the first one my neck of the woods got, when was it, in October or November, and then when it got heavy in January and February and even this month.

But still, with all my complaining, New York has gotten maybe half of what Boston has received, and it is far from a record for our area.

In fact, we got more in the winter of 2013-2014 than we did in the winter of 2014-2015.

It only feels like more this time around because we got it in many doses; in the winter of 2013-2014, we got it in maybe three really bad snowstorms, and that was it. This time around, it was simply more spread out.

But nearly 109 inches of snow is quite impressive.

I dug out a lot of snow this winter, but more than nine feet of snow? I could easily break my back on that one, so keep it where it is.

New Yorkers and Bostonians usually don't get along very well, and we do have those heated sports rivalries, the most competitive of which is the Yankees versus the Red Sox.

But I don't mind that Boston has won this winter's battle for the most snow and done so in convincing fashion.

Winter ends and spring comes around in just three days, but of course, that does not mean that the snow will be ending. We have had several late Marches and early Aprils where we had snow.

I remember one April, maybe three or four years ago, when we had snow in early April, and then on my birthday on April 28, it was well into the 90s in temperature.

That is what makes April the wackiest month on the calendar for weather in the Eastern part of the U.S., and I guess that is why I like the fact that I was born in April.

But back to Boston and its 108.6 inches of snow--could it go higher?

As I was alluding to just before, yes it could, if the necessary cold air and precipitation meet once again.

This year, the two are having a torrid affair, one that I think we all hope will just be over quickly, like a one-night stand.

But this multi-day winter has been one for the books, at least in Boston, and I tip my hat to them.

But again, if lots of snow has to go somewhere, why not Boston?

They will survive.

Spell Boston backwards, and you get "Not Sob," and that carried them through the nearly 100 years it took them to win a World Series, and it will have to carry them now ...

Until next winter, when they will have a chance to top those 108.6 inches.

I hope they do it, because being Boston, they deserve it.
