Rant #3,749: The Door Into Summer

I had quite a busy day yesterday with work; lots of things to do, very time consuming, all in the middle of a heat wave.

It was in the mid-90s in my neck of the woods, and very humid.

And today and tomorrow aren't going to be any better, but we are supposed to get a break later in the week, with much lower temperatures.

Me, my allergies really are trouble during times like this, so, since I don't have anywhere to go anyway, it is better for me to stay indoors.

I had all of this work to do, so if I had to stay in, then at least I was pretty busy.

We try not to use the air conditioner in the afternoon, because the electric rates are way too high during the day--

But I have to tell you, I was very uncomfortable doing all the work I had to do, but I managed to stay hydrated.

I am drinking lots of water and seltzer, so I guess it could have been worse--

But I will tell you that our community's power grid will be tested the next two days, when the temperatures continue to be high and more people jump on the grid with air conditioners and other appliances

And I also notice that when it is hot, my computer and printer don't work as well as they should, so i did plenty of work on the computer in the morning when it wasn't as steamy, and I will try to continue to do that again, certainly today and tomorrow

It isn't as bad as it was a couple of weeks ago, when it was 104 degrees here, but it is certainly bad enough.

I do miss having a pool to jump into, but those days are over.

Sure, we could go to one of the town pools, but when you had your own, private pool for 50 years, I have to tell you, it just isn't the same.

Happily, we do have a terrace ...

But my wife said that sitting on it was impossible yesterday, as it was too hot and humid outside to really enjoy.

I remember as a kid, someone would get a wrench and open up the hydrants, with water squirting out into the middle of the street.

It was a miracle none of us were hit by a car, but the water pressure in the area plummeted, so caps were given out, so that the pressure didn't fall as much.

Those were the good old days, I guess ...

So, while I would rather have 90 degrees and high humidity than a foot of snow any day, I would love the weather to be somewhere in between--

But again, whether it's July 1965 or July 2025,  it's summer, and at least in these parts, summer brings the heat--

And yes, i am feeling it ...

Feeling it big time.

I am also feeling it for satirist Tom Lehrer, who passed on a few days ago.

He won't be spending "Chanukah in Santa Monica" anymore, but you have to believe he will now be in a much better place.

R.I.P.
