Rant #2,947: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

This past weekend produced  “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” results, and all I can say is that this guy needs a break after the past few weeks of horror on a variety of levels.

So here is the rundown of “good,” “bad,” and "ugly" things that went on this weekend.

• The Good: I had something of an epiphany this past weekend, as I looked at what has been ailing my computer for the past month or so.

My computer has been on a timer since I got it several years ago, meaning that it starts at an appointed time each day, which on an iMac you can set up in the Energy Saver portion in the computer’s System Preferences.

I have had it set to go on at about 6:30 a.m, each morning, and it has done that dutifully, and without fail, for years.

But as you know, abut a month ago, the computer started having problems, and simply wasn’t turning over or fully booting up.

I even changed the 6:30 a.m. startup time to different times, and sometimes it would start up like it always has, but most times it would sit in sort of a computer limbo, just sitting there and doing very little of anything.

We went away on vacation, and I removed the startup time completely, and when we came home, I put it back in, but to the same results.

And then, on this past Friday night, I had an epiphany … why not try to start up the computer each day manually?

And on Saturday and Sunday and today, one push of a button started up the computer without fail.

Look, I am not going to say that the computer is working properly, because it should start up without fail on the timer.

But if this is how the computer is gong to live out its twilight years, that is fine with me.

Let’s see if this continues to a fourth day, and a fifth day, and beyond.

• The Bad: Our pool is a green mess, and no matter what we do with it, it continues to be a green mess.

We have tried everything to get the green out, but if you want to see the world’s largest bowl of pea soup, just come to my house and you will see it for yourself.

I guess I had another epiphany this weekend, although what I think has happened with the pool is what I thought even before we went on vacation.

The filter appears to not be working, which means that while the motor is doing what it is supposed to do, the filter is somehow not, which means that everything that I am doing is for naught.

I have no idea how to clean out the filter, or to judge if it is damaged; I guess I need an expert to do that.

But at this point in time—and with plenty of days of 90 degrees or more that we could have been in the pool—I think I am going to finally chalk this up as a lost cause this summer, and shut the pool down.

We spent hundreds of dollars that we don’t have this year on getting the pool in shape—including purchasing a new motor—and it appears that we were doomed from the start.

I will worry about this next summer, but this summer appears to be a washout.

• The Ugly: As you know, I had that pre-cancerous growth removed from my scalp this past week, but it was full of puss and seemingly infected as the week went on, so on Saturday, I made an appointment with the dermatologist again to see if my assumption was correct—

And it was.

The sore that was left from the procedure had become infected, but the doctor said it was slowly forming a scab, but he also said that sometimes, the healing of such sores “is a long and arduous process,” and that I would have to give it time to fully heal.

The sore is in a bad place on my head—not that any place up there is particularly good—but I am just going to have to wait for better results.

He did give me an ointment to put on the sore, which I am doing, but it doesn’t appear to be affecting it too much positively or negatively, so I guess I am just going to have to be patient on this thing.

My wife says it appears to be scabbing, but it is a moist stab, not a hard scab, so it might take some time to get the point where it is ready to go.

I just don’t know …

And that phrase basically sums up “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” that I just described.

It has put everything into a limbo that I am not comfortable with, and what’s more, it has given me a colossal headache.

My head is paining … what do I take to ease the pain?
