Rant #2,772: Revolution

We had a great day yesterday as we celebrated my wife’s birthday and retirement.

We had a family-only get-together in a local restaurant, and it went really well.

The food was great, the company was even better, and it was just a fun, fun time for all of us, with lots of laughs in between all the food courses.

My wife really enjoyed herself and that was the intent, anyway.

And it was also the first time in two years that my mother had been in a restaurant.

What with COVID and the death of my father, she hasn’t been tied to the house at all, but the one place that she didn’t venture to was a restaurant.

Now she can cross that off her current bucket list.

So everything went really well.

Now that I got that out of the way, let me wish all of our Mexican blog readers a happy Revolution Day today, and many more.

According to Wikipedia, Revolution Day in Mexico is the following:

“Revolution Day is an official Mexican government holiday, celebrated annually in Mexico on November 20, marking the start of what became the Mexican Revolution.”

OK, but the celebration this year is today, November 15, so what is up with that?

According to another site, the Public Holidays site (https://publicholidays.mx/revolution-day/#:~:text=Revolution%20Day%20Revolution%20Day%202021%2C%202022%20and%202023,Diaz%20dictatorship%20that%20began%20that%20day%20in%201910.), the celebration’s day now varies by the year:

“Revolution Day is one of the most celebrated of all Mexico’s patriotic holidays. It was traditionally observed every 20 November to commemorate the uprising against the Porfirio Diaz dictatorship that began that day in 1910. However it is now held on the third Monday in November to provide workers a long weekend.”

Sounds like how we do many of our holidays right here in the good old U.S. of A.

So since we don’t celebrate that holiday here in the states, maybe it is a time to start our own revolution.

Nah, we have had plenty of revolutions here.

Same old, same old.

And remember, as the Beatles sang, if you want a revolution …

“But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow … “

So I guess it isn’t worth it.

The only revolution that I am personally proud to be a part of is the vinyl revolution, where vinyl records are on a major comeback, in particular with younger people.

I was at the forefront of that revolution. I never got rid of my 45s and LPs when people were dumping them for CDs, and now, so many people are on my side with their choice of music format.

So I guess I was one of many leaders of that revolution, and for that, I am quite proud.

That is the type of revolution that we need now, a revolution that relaxes us rather than one that makes us nuts.

So let Mexico have its Revolution Day, and we can have our own “Revolution Day” on July 4.

But to me, just do what Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band once sang:

“Just take those old records off the shelf
I'll sit and listen to 'em by myself
Today's music ain't got the same soul
I like that old-time rock 'n' roll … “

That is the type of revolution that I like … at 33 1/3 and 45 RPM speeds.

Anybody for 78 RPM, or even 16 RPM?

I’m game for that!
