Rant #2,502: Another Day

Today is the 10th day on the calendar, so the year 2020 has finally reached the double-figure mark as far as days are concerned.

We still have 90 days to reach the 100-day figure, and we won't do that until April 9, what with this year being a leap year. The only good thing about that is that February 29 is on a Saturday, so for most of the 9-to-5ers, it won't be an extra day of work.

Today being just another day on the calendar, let's look at some historic events that happened right on this day throughout history, based on information culled from onthisday.com.

Since 1900, many things have happened on this day that have impacted all of us in one way or another. Let's look at some of them.

In 1911, the first photo ever shot from an airplane was taken. This was taken during a flight from San Diego, Calif., but I cannot find the photo to show you what it was.

In 1912, the world's first flying boat had its maiden flight. It debuted in New York.

In 1927, Fritz Lang's groundbreaking film, "Metropolis," premiered in Berlin.

In 1943, Franklin Delano Roosevelt became the first U.S. President to visit a foreign country during wartime, when he left the White House for Morocco.

In 1949, the groundbreaking situation comedy, "The Goldbergs," debuted on CBS. It would be more than six decades later for American TV to have another sitcom featuring a Jewish family, ironically also called "The Goldbergs," on ABC.

In 1956, Elvis Presley recorded the single, "Heartbreak Hotel," and the world of popular music was never the same after it. Presley became its star of stars, and to this day, his recording accomplishments have been approached, but never really equaled.

In 1964, ironically on the eighth anniversary of the Presley recording, the "Introducing the Beatles" LP was released in the U.S., and the world has never seen the frenzy that ensued, as the Beatles became the biggest rock and roll act in the world.

In 1984, the classic "Where's the Beef" commercials featuring Clara Peller debuted, and put Wendy's on the map as one of the top hamburger fast food sellers in the country.

There were other historic events that happened on this day, but I think we will stop here for now.

I mean, where else will you find Elvis Presley, the Beatles and Clara Peller mentioned in the same breath?

Stop while I am ahead of the curve, before I get in trouble.

Have a great weekend, and I will speak to you again on Monday.
