Rant #1,738: Bitten

I am one of those people who is very prone to mosquito bites during the summer.

I don't know what it is, but once the summer comes, and I start wearing shorts, I get attacked.

They don't go for my arms, generally, but my legs ... I have so many pock marks on my legs from mosquito bites that my legs look like a war zone.

No, the photo shown here is not from my leg, but whoever had this picture taken of their bitten up legs ... well, I feel for them too.

And I am not talking about the Zika-carrying mosquitos now. That is another story for another time.

I am simply talking about bites from your garden-variety mosquitos.

I have heard that some people are more prone to mosquito bites than others.

My wife can be in the same spot that I am and not get hit, so she doesn't get that many mosquito bites.

Same thing with my father. He isn't prone to them either.

But I take after my mother, and we both get hit pretty hard.

This past weekend, my family had a barbecue--more about that tomorrow--and we also visited my father in law, who is in the veterans living area which is part of Stony Brook Hospital here on Long Island--and I was bombarded by these nasty pests.

At times, I could almost feel them biting into my skin.

And again, it's always the legs, rarely anywhere else, although I have had mosquito bites on my hands and arms on occasion.

Some people, like me, are more susceptible to this. I think it has to do with sweat, and I am a sweater. I am always warm, and that probably has a lot to do with it too.

Being warm, you produce sweat, and sweat basically is a calling card for the bugs. They sense it, smell it, are drawn to it, and attack.

And this weekend, I got attacked.

I have been attacked this entire summer, but being outside so much this weekend really brought this problem to the fore, and to my legs.

My legs itch like all heck, and I try not to scratch these bites, but once the long pants go on for work, they get itched, anyway, by the fabric of the pants, so I am sunk.

I itch them myself, so I really can't win here.

I have often joked that these bugs go for kosher meat, since I am of the Jewish persuasion. They only go for the best, I tell myself.

Maybe they do, but I haven't seen any of these bugs wearing yarmulkes yet, so I can say what I want to try to lessen the situation in my mind, but I am still something of a mosquito drawer, and I have been for as long as I can remember.

Once the weather gets cooler, and the shorts get put away in the drawer for next summer, I am OK, but for now, I probably will get many more bites before the summer is over.

And since this has been my history, there is absolutely nothing I can do about it.

Yes, I have tried the sprays and such, but they do not work.

Once mosquito-prone, always mosquito-prone.

Maybe there is something to that kosher meat thing ... .
