Rant #1,553: Working For the Weekend (I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself)


So, it is finally Friday.

It is finally the end of the work week.

Well, not yet, but by a certain time this afternoon, most of us will be done with the work week, with the weekend ahead of us.

I should not really say most. Many of us will be in this situation.

Someone near and dear to me--my wife, the birthday girl--has to work on Sunday.

She is not all too pleased with that, since she originally wasn't supposed to work on this day.

I hate it when she works on the weekend. It deflates the whole thing for me.

Happily, she has not had to work a full weekend in a long time. Those are even worse. It's like there is no weekend.

I work for the weekend, I really do.

As the minutes move during every Friday, I come closer to my goal. Heck, as I am typing this, I am one minute closer to reaching the weekend.

That is how I look at it. It might be the wrong approach, but it gives me a goal, sort of an end line to shoot for.

If I can just get through one more day, I have two off to recuperate.

And for me, today is a payday, which makes things all that much better.

My son and I are going to take my wife out this weekend for her birthday. On Saturday, we will dine at the restaurant of her choice.

It does not matter to me where we eat, but wherever we eat, we are going to have a good time.

Hopefully, it will be one of those restaurants where tipping is acceptable. I am sure you have read that many eating establishments have gone the no-tip route, raising their prices rather than allow you to add on something extra for good service. This way, the restaurateurs theorize, they can pay their workers a better hourly wage.

This is absolutely ridiculous. When I get good service I want to reward the waiter, when I get bad service, I want him to know that I got bad service by providing a lesser or no tip at all.

To just summarily raise the prices is wrong, because it fleeces the customer, and does not give patrons a say on whether service was good or bad.

I don't like that at all.

And this is how some people want to equalize what their workers get paid, make it more of a living wage?

To heck with them, what about those very patrons who are keeping these establishments afloat?

Nobody cares about us. Heck, I haven't had a raise in salary in years and years. Nobody cares about me.

But back to Friday ...

The phrase TGIF--thank God it's Friday--really is incorrect.

It should really be TGIS--thank God it's Saturday--shouldn't it?

Friday is still a workday for most. err, many of us, Saturday is not, so why are we thanking anybody or anything for Friday?

I guess it doesn't sound as sexy, but like another phrase that cropped up in the 1980s--"working for the weekend"--that is just what I do.

  1. I'm a generous tipper, I leave 20%, but I prefer a no-tip policy. Here in New York restaurant workers earn about $7 an hour, the minimum wage here for non tipped workers is $8.25. But the federal minimum wage for tipped workers is just under $3. And they pay income tax on the tips, whether or not they actually receive the cash. While some tipped workers do extremely well -- bartenders really rake it in -- most tipped workers struggle to get by. And most would prefer to make a guaranteed decent wage than to rely on the whims of power hungry customers. Google the user name Springs1 or Springs131, she's a real trip. Exhibit 1 in support of banning the practice of tipping. What that woman does if you forget her ranch dressing ...

  2. I would rather make the decision whether I like the service or not. Adding onto the already high prices on the menu is like pouring gasoline on fire. I won't go to places that do this if I know about it. It is unfair to the customer. It has absolutely nothing to do with "power hungry customers." Speak for yourself on that one. I don't come in with an agenda when I go out to eat. It has to do with quality service. I have overtipped for good service and undertipped, or left no tip at all, for bad service. I guess you are waiting for a world where people who wipe up after you make the same salary that you do.
