Rant #2,081: Nothing From Nothing
I don't know about you, but I personally have absolutely no interest in the Olympics, winter or otherwise.
I know that these are generally tremendous athletes, and they also generally represent our country very proudly, but no, I don't have any interest in the Olympics.
I guess the reason is that over the years, this has become more of a political spectacle than anything else, and it simply turns me off.
And this year's Winter Olympics continues that trend, where politics are more present than the Olympic spirit.
This time around, we have the two Koreas joining together to field a team, and with it, the possible repercussions into the future.
When you have a nut of a ruler of North Korea--who would try to blow up the world if he could--any union of two countries, even in a supposed sporting event, must be looked at cautiously.
And that is what our country is doing, and doing very visibly.
Vice President Mike Pence is being very choosy as to whom he frequents with, and he has kept his distance from the North Korean folk.
He ignores them, and directs his energies at dignitaries from South Korea and Japan.
And then there are the petty political instances, like one U.S. Olympian declaring racism because he wasn't chosen to carry our flag in the opening ceremonies, having to give way to a less successful, white, female Olympian.
Wah, wah!
And then you have more political crybabyness from the likes of skier Linday Vonn, who said she will refuse to attend any White House function because she doesn't agree with our President's policies.
Wah, wah!
And you wonder why I--and probably millions of others--have absolutely no interest in these Olympics.
I actually have told you a white lie about interest. I did turn on the curling competition for a minute or two, because as usual, I cannot believe that this supposed "sport" is part of the Olympics.
Yes, it is a strange sport, but once that set into my head again, I shut it off.
And also what turns me off is the phoniness of many of those who are interested in the games.
They know everything about the Olympians when the games are being played, but ask them six months from now who won and lost, who the names were, what the sports were, and they don't have a clue.
It is almost like the phonies who are sooooooooo interested in the Super Bowl, but only because it gives them an unofficial holiday to party hearty and act like idiots.
No, that type of behavior is not for me. I could care less who wins the luge competition.
Honestly, I have more important sporting concerns.
Basketball is completely dead in New York--the Knicks are absolutely bad, the Nets are non-entities--but baseball is stirring up in Florida and Arizona.
It hopefully will be a good season for the New York Yankees, and the New York Mets look to be a force again--so that is where my sporting interest is right now.
With the 2018 MLB season ready to start in just two months, where else could my interest be?
The Olympics? Nothing but a sideshow.
Pitchers and catchers are set to report this week ... to me, that's more important than whoever can accomplish a triple axle.
Get out the bat and gloves--it's baseball season!
